WHAT is Transition?
Making decisions for a grown up child with a disability is complicated. As a parent of a child with a disability, until now you and the school system have shared the responsibility of how your child will spend the majority of his or her time.
Transition is the process of moving through youth to adulthood. Going through transition includes thinking and planning for the future. As federally mandated services through the school system end, youth with disabilities need to prepare for adult life. Plans can include education, work, maintaining your health, housing and support options. Learning about government entities, social security and Medicaid waivers; adult educational, vocational, recreational options and other community participation; and special needs trusts and long-term planning are essential components. It is never too early to start planning the transition process for your child with a disability!
The Arc of Northern Virginia is committed to being a transition resource for people with disabilities and their families.
- Funded by a grant from WalMart & The Arc of US, The Arc of Northern Virginia offers a 3-day transition series for individuals with disabilities age 14-26 and their families.
- The Arc of Northern Virginia also offers a “lunch bunch” meeting every other Tuesday from 12-2 pm to consult with you about the transition process and other concerns.
- We also have a free downloadable transition guide, “Securing a Future for Your Child with a Disability”, that can be downloaded HERE.
