Residential Support
When children reach adulthood they typically move away from their parents’ home and begin a life of independence and growth. Children with mental retardation should be given the same opportunity to develop skills, relationships, and lives outside of the family. Persons with disabilities most frequently require some level of support as they move into a life of independence. That balance of support and independence can be provided through a range of housing options including group homes, supported apartments or houses, and congregate care facilities.
Congregate care facilities are large facilities that typically serve a dozen or more people under one roof. Individuals who live in this setting typically have significant medical and/or behavioral needs that demand constant attention. The daily schedule in such facilities is usually very structured, including routine meal schedules and activity schedules. The staff generally consists of doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, and direct care aides. Group homes are usually houses located in community neighborhoods in which three to six adults with disabilities live together. Direct support staff assist the residents with meal planning and preparation, chores, visits to the doctor, shopping, and recreation activities. Supported living arrangements generally involve a counselor who “drops in” a few hours each week at the home of an individual with a disability to help the person with budgeting, banking, reading mail, shopping, cooking, and getting household repairs done.
The costs associated with residential support will vary depending on the need for supports and the availability of housing options. In some cases, state and local governments provide funding for the supports and housing needs. To determine if your child will qualify for those financial supports you should contact your local Community Services Board as you begin your search for housing for your adult child.
Area Community Services Boards (CSB) and the Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) are potential funding sources for vocational, residential, respite, family support and other services for persons meeting eligibility requirements. Each CSB and the DRS has its own set of eligibility requirements and should be contacted for more specific information. Generally, residents are served by the CSB in their county or city of residence.
The providers listed below are not necessarily approved providers by each CSB or the DRS. For more information about what providers are approved in each jurisdiction, contact the specific CSB or DRS. If the provider is not approved by a CSB or the DRS a family or individual may choose to pay for services with private funds. Some of the community-based providers listed below will work with your family to come to a financial agreement to provide appropriate services for your child.
