Dentists

Routine dental care is very important for all individuals with disabilities. Many children and adults with disabilities are susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease due to crowded teeth, jaw structure, and poor brushing habits. In addition, medication and diet (e.g., eating too much sugar or resisting vegetables or fruits) are additional complicating factors that can be detrimental to good dental health. Often, general clumsiness due to a lack of coordination or accidents related to seizures increase the risk of oral trauma in individuals with disabilities. Sometimes, tactile defensiveness (particularly oral defensiveness), high anxiety, and the resulting behavior issues that can make an office visit very difficult for individuals with special needs, mean that it is very challenging for families to be consistent in providing appropriate dental care.
