On my visit to The Arc of Warren County, I had the opportunity to meet and visit with several of the individuals who founded this local chapter and who created the community-based services that are now available in Warren County. This group of dedicated advocates continues to pave the way for “A Life Like Yours” through the provision of transportation, financial assistance, or opportunities for social networking to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their community.

My visit to this chapter occurred during The Arc of Warren County’s Board of Directors meeting at Warren County Developmental Services. As an introduction, members shared with me what it was that led them to become involved with The Arc…

One of the Board Members, Ed Clark, discussed how being a transportation provider for The Arc got him involved. The group described how many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are in desperate need of transportation services in their community. In response, the local chapter partnered with their local Community Services Board to purchase, maintain, and fuel a van for transportation. This service allows individuals with ID/DD participate in various social activities, many of which are sponsored by The Arc. Each month, participants in The Arc’s recreational program identify an activity of their choice. Members of The Arc, family members, and other volunteers then assist the group in participating in these activities which have included opportunities such as bowling, movies, sports, etc.

The Arc of Warren hosts a number of events throughout the year, including an annual dinner. The chapter uses gatherings such as this to help members become familiar with services and supports that are available to them, through inviting guest speakers to join them to discuss topics ranging from music therapy to guardianship. Right now, The Arc of Warren is gearing up for its annual picnic, which will be taking place the evening of September 10th.

We also talked about the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their community. Carol Olsen, President, described the inadequate funding of community-based services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as “an overwhelming situation”. We talked at length about the waiting lists and reimbursement rates, and also what could be done about them. The group agreed that increasing visits and communication with legislators across the state through the network of local chapters was a necessary step in promoting “A Life Like Yours” for Virginians with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Many thanks to The Arc of Warren for the opportunity to visit. I look forward to joining you and the rest of your chapter for your annual picnic!
