Questions about the DD Waiver and Medicaid

Here are some frequently asked questions that we receive:

If I have applied for the DD Waiver, does this mean I have applied for Medicaid?

No! You also need to apply for Medicaid. You can go through your local department of Social Services to do so.

I am afraid my child will not qualify for Medicaid because Department of Social Services takes into account the parents income. If our income is more than the limits, does that mean we will not qualify for the waiver?

No. If you do not have an actual waiver slot, then your Medicaid application will be reviewed with the typical financial eligibility requirements. However, if your son or daughter HAS a waiver slot, not just on the waiting list, then the Medicaid eligibility would be reviewed under the Long Term Care Medicaid rules, meaning that only the child's income is considered.
