Individual and Family Advocacy Services

The Arc of Northern Virginia offers individuals with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families individual advocacy services across several issue areas including:

  • Housing Options
  • Employment Options and Supports
  • First Responder and Emergency Planning and Training
  • Guardianship and the Alternatives
  • Long Term Financial Planning - Special Needs Trusts
  • Medicaid Waiver Home and Community Based Services
  • Quality of Care in Residential and Vocational Services
  • Relationship Development and Sexuality for Self-Advocates
  • Safety Self-Defense Training for Self-Advocate

The Arc provides an array of individual advocacy assistance ranging from phone referrals to other professional advocates who possess specialized expertise in certain areas; to short-term phone consultations; to more intensive fee-based consultations and case advocacy.

The goal of these services is to to enhance each individual and/or family's ability to be more self-reliant in maximizing their potential for growth and development. Developing good advocacy skills will empower individuals and their family members as they transition through life to new placements in the community and will force change and improvement in the supports and services offered on a case-by-case basis.

More intensive or continuing advocacy support that includes lengthy consultation, attendance at meetings or hearings, the development of advocacy plans, research on relevant laws and regulations, file reviews, and the preparation of documents is available at $70/hour.
