After the Virginia General Assembly wraps up their session in late winter, the localities begin to work on their budgets. This process usually begins in March and ends in late April. It is important for citizens to follow the budget process to ensure that funding for services that are needed by our members is included in the budget.
Citizens can impact the process by finding out who their representatives are and what they stand for, reading the newspaper, volunteering in the community, being aware of issues and how they affect you; realizing that you can initiate change and remember that every vote counts. Your vote and your voice can always make a difference!
During the budget process The Arc works to find families and individuals who will work to educate their legislators about the needs of our community by providing testimony at public hearings and contacting legislators through visits, letters, calls and email.
It is important to stay informed throughout the year about issues that affect individuals with mental retardation in Alexandria. The best way to get current information is by attending meetings of the Alexandria Community Services Board and the meetings of the Mental Retardation Committee of that Board.
